Week 38

Mar 30- Apr 6, 2026

Mon.

We pulled up anchor and traveled 16 nautical miles to Georgetown, S.C. this morning. We had lots of dolphins swimming with us today. My favorite is when they play and jump in our wake.

We went to the Maritime museum which had several interesting stories. One of the ships from here was the first integrated ship with black and white service members serving together. Many wooden sailboats made this their port.

Next we went to the Gullah museum. Gullahs are the decendants of the slaves. Michelle Obama, Michael jordan, and James brown are gullahs. They brought the rice crop from West Africa. Rice became the most profitable crop here in Georgetown with many very wealthy families. Georgetown has more antebellum houses still standing than Charleston. We walked down a street for several blocks with many of these beautiful antebellum mansions. The live oak trees are so big they form a canopy over the road. Truly old south grandeur!

We took a tour of the Kaminski mansion. He was in the navy reserve for both world wars. They bought the mansion in 1931. It was built in the 1860s. They didn't have children, so when she died in 1972 she deeded the house and all furnishings to the city to become a museum. Kaminski was stationed at pearl harbor and the officer in duty Dec 7, 1941. He recognized there was a threat after a Japanese sub was found near Pearl harbor, but when he alerted the upper brass, they told him to stand down. He is featured in the movie Tora Tora Tora. He survived and lived until 1965ish. The kaminski house most closely resembles Tara in Gone With the Wind. She took off the second floor piazza for that reason.

The house next to the Kaminski mansion, the Robert Stewart house, hosted president Washington for tea, when he came through on his southern tour in 1791.

Tues.

We left the marina and just went a block down to the city dock. We were only staying for a couple of hours.

We went on a tour of the Hobcaw Barony. It's an area deeded by king George of 16,000 acres. There were 5 plantations on the property. Later in the early 1900s, wall street magnate Mr. Baruch bought the property. He's known as the most famous person you never knew. Because he had so much money and influence his circle of people were all the very rich and political associations. We toured his mansion where in 1932 Winston Churchill stayed and in 1944 FDR stayed. His children never had children, but his oldest daughter stayed buying up all the property. She lived on it until her death in 1965. She wanted it preserved, so she left it to a foundation. Colleges come here to study marine biology and also forestry. It's a unique place as on one side is the ocean and the other side is river. There's marine biology to study for both salt water and fresh water. The mist Interesting part of the tour was the old slave village and houses. He took care of them and had a doctor come into their village weekly and had a church for them.

After lunch we left the city dock and went 23 nautical miles to Bull creek anchorage. We taught Ken and Darlene how to play the qwixx dice game. We tried looking for gators at night with our flashlight, but we didn't have any luck. It was a super beautiful peaceful anchorage. We loved sitting outside listening to all the animal sounds.

Wed.

We pulled up anchor and cruised for 3.5 hours to north myrtle beach. The marina was a nice one Called Barefoot Marina. We ubered over the bridge to LuLus café for lunch. We walked around the shopping area. Ed and I walked back to the boat while Ken and Darlene did some more shopping.

We taught our institute class tonight.

Thurs.

We did laundry this morning while Ken took an Uber to go pick up their rental car. Walmart delivered our groceries. After lunch we drove down to myrtle beach to do some shopping at the outlet mall and Allison got some Easter outfits. Then we went to Ken and Darlene's hotel. That area was just lined with one hotel after the other. We went to the pool to read and relax for a bit before dinner.

After dinner we went to the myrtle beach legends in concert. There were 4 impressionist: Elvis, Carrie Underwood, the Blues Brothers, and Bruno Mars. It was very entertaining. We enjoyed it more than we thought we would. We said good bye to the Larsen's tonight. We have enjoyed having them on the boat. They were great guests to have.

Fri.

We did some chores and got a pump out before leaving the marina. We didn't have too far to go before we crossed the state line into North Carolina! We have almost completed the loop! Unbelievable!

We traveled just over 6 hours and 42 nautical miles to Cape Fear to an anchorage for the evening in a small cove south of South pelican island. So we just had to watch the movie Cape Fear. We anchored right by south Pelican island. There are so many seagulls the beach was just covered. They were so noisy! I guess now we need to watch Hitchcock's The Birds!

Sat.

We pulled up anchor and only went 8.1 nautical miles to the Carolina beach state park marina. We're the biggest boat in this very small marina! It is shallow at low tide…3.5ft.

We walked about 2 miles to Carolina beach town for lunch. It's a typical cute beach town.

We went to the state park visitors center and to see the Venus fly trap. Apparently here and around 70 miles around here, is the only place venusly traps grow naturally. We've never seen them in the wild. We walked more trails in the park and got lost because the park map is wrong and the red and orange signs look the same color. By the time we got back we had walked about 7 miles. My back and feet were really feeling it.

Sun.

Happy Easter! Our friends Griff and Susan from the boat cavok came in today here at the state park. We haven't seen them since Crystal river in Florida about 4 months ago.

We watched the first session of conference and then went for a walk on more of the trails with Griff and Susan. We walked 4 miles. It was fun to visit with them.

We watched the afternoon session of conference and just hung out on the boat.

See ya next week…
