Week 36
Week 36
Mar 16-22 2026
Monday
We spent the morning on the boat. We went walking to investigate this cute town of Brunswick Georgia. General Oglthorpe founded Georgia in the early 1700s. He wanted a place for people to have their freedom of religion and basically freedom. He didn't believe in slavery. He was sent here by the crown to be a barrier from Spain. He had strict moral standards and the people rebelled against his strictness. He eventually left Brunswick never to return, because the people still wanted slavery.
We had planned to do more outside boat chores but another huge storm came in. It rained most of the night, hard. We had a lot of lightening this afternoon. Ed fixed the stern thruster battery. The gusts were over 30 mph. It's why we decided to stay another day. We knew the wind was going to be bad today. During a short window of hardly any rain, Ed was able to swap out the batteries for our stern thruster. We're happy to have that working again! But Ed slipped going down in the lazerette and hit his nose. He needed some steri strips for the small laceration.
The marina hosted a St. Patrick's day gathering in the club house. They offered free beer and wine and then there was a pot luck of appetizers. I made chocolate chip cookies for our contribution. We brought our own diet coke. Someone brought corned beef sliders. We were happy to get some corned beef!
There's a pickle ball court here at the marina. We were excited to see that. But there has been so much rain and wind we haven't been able to play. So disappointing!
Tuesday
Happy St. Paddy's day! The wind howled all night long and we woke up to high 30s. It's chilly! We left Brunswick and traveled 31.5 nautical miles to an anchorage. There is nothing between Brunswick and savannah but marshland and islands. You either have to do a long day and get to isle of hope or anchor out somewhere. It's still pretty windy today, about 20 knot winds.
I made our traditional pistachio cake for our holiday celebration dinner at anchor.
Wednesday
We pulled up anchor at high tide, so going through these narrow shallow places was easier.
We tried to go to a marina, where some of our you tube followers live and wanted to meet up with us, but it was too shallow. The boat actually got grounded and the keel was stuck in the mud for a few minutes untill we could back off. Ed was able to back off the shoal, and we aborted that plan. We were mid channel and the charts both said 21 ft deep! But no! Not so. No damage. We traveled a total of 39 nautical miles to another anchorage.
We worked on some more waxing and polishing of the boat. I did a little work on cleaning the teak.
We had our institute class tonight. It's a small group with a couple of them really struggling to speak English. We hope they enjoy it and feel the spirit.
Thurs.
We left early enough to go north through Hell gate at high tide. We traveled 2.5 hours and went 19 nautical miles to isle of hope marina. It's 10 miles south of savanna. We got a loaner car and drove to savannah. We toured the history of pirates museum. It was very interesting.
We did boat projects for about 3 hours. Our bodies really pay for working hard, but things are looking so good.
Friday
We had Walmart deliver our groceries this morning. We continued waxing, polishing, and teak cleaning. We got a loaner car at 1 pm. and went to play tennis. We haven't played since fort Myers. It felt great to move and run.
We were able to get the car again at 5 and drove in to Savannah for dinner. It's such a charming city. Ed had an grilled apple pie chicken sandwich. He said it was amazing. It had chicken, bacon, and baked apples and an applesauce dipping sauce and grilled cheese.
We got the laundry done and started getting ready for Rachelle and Jordan's and Alaina’s arrival tomorrow. We're very excited to have them.
Saturday
We spent the morning cleaning and organizing the boat. We picked up Rachelle, Jordan, and Alaina with the marina loaner car and went straight to Fort Pulaski. It's built right on the river and has a full moat. General Pulaski was named first Calvary general of the Continental army by George Washington.
We took the kids to the boat and had some lunch. Then we walked to the Wormslow plantation, settled in 1713. There is still a part that is private where the 8th generation is still living. The driveway is 1.5 miles long and lined with over 400 live oaks. It is breathtaking.
We walked back and got the loaner car to go to dinner. We went for a little after dinner walk.
We're so happy to have our guests. They were so tired after flying through the night on a red eye. Alaina was such a champ. She wasn't fussy or onery at all. We all went to bed early. Alaina wanted to sleep in the bunk room alone, so her parents were out on the hide a bed. They said the hide a bed was comfortable.
Sunday
We left the marina this morning to cruise 15 miles to downtown Savannah. It was beautiful and 85 degrees. Alaina helped steer the boat and they got to see dolphins. We had a golf cart ride over to the ferry, which then took us across the river to old town. Our first destination was the SCAD story. It's the Savannah College of art and design. It's a cool interactive explanation of the beginnings of this school. It is like a Disney attraction. Very well done.
The kids went to the pirate museum while boppi and I sat at a park. We all ate dinner at the old pirate house. It's the oldest building in Georgia built in the early 1700s. It's the place many men were Shang hied and forced into slavery on ships. The restaurant had an underground tunnel out to the river to the ships. They would take drunken sailors out to sell them off.
Our last activity was a horse drawn carriage tour around the historic district. It was fascinating. Poor Alaina fell asleep. We walked all over! It was a great day!
See ya next week.
